The lists of the Top 20 Young Outstanding On Air Personalities of 2020 (male and female) have been released. The list, put together by Nigerian radio aggregator radiocast.ng features young broadcasters from across Nigeria blazing the trail in the broadcast industry.
As expected, the list is dominated by Lagos and Abuja based broadcasters, with a sprinkling of OAPs from other parts of the country.
Benin City has one entry apiece on the male and female categories. Chioma Phyllis Ifemeje aka Miz Philz, Head of Programs at Vibes 97.3 FM came in at number 5 in the female category, while Charles 'De Bahd Guy' Opurum, co-host of the Breakfast Show on 92.7 KU FM placed 20th.
Elsewhere, on the list of The Top 20 OAP Revelations of 2020, the only other Benin based OAP was Chuks 'Chuksy' Cummings also of Vibes FM, who placed 10th.
Miz Philz is the host of the midday show on Vibes FM, this duty she shares with Chuksy, and together they are a formidable pair especially when it comes to entertainment issues. Their show is noted for having a high number of celebrities in attendance as well as the laid back and fast paced manner in which it is conducted.
Charles Opurum on the other hand has his strength in his sagacity relative to political issues in the country. His political show Dialogue is an authoritative show for people who wish to know the latest in the political space. He is renowned for his interviews, and has conducted some very high profile interviews. At under 30, his best years are ahead.
Interestingly there are quite a number of fantastic broadcasters on the list who – while no longer Benin based – have their history intertwined with the ancient city. Osato 'EDK' Edokpayi of Soundcity at number 1 is a former staff of Vibes FM, while Chika 'Tshyka' Agu (Radio Now Lagos) 10th and Augustus 'Gucci' Aigbe (Cool FM Port Harcourt) 16th are both former staff of KU FM.
It would not be out of place to say that Benin City is being put on the map in comparison with the bigger cities like Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt, these young men and women have proven that they can hold their own against their colleagues from around the country. The future is indeed looking bright not only for them, but for the city and others who look up to them.
