German Federal prosecutors take over railway arson probe

Sept. 14, 2023

German federal prosecutors have taken over the investigation into last week’s arson attack on railway infrastructure that disrupted train services between Berlin and Hamburg.

The federal prosecution office the highest prosecuting authority in Germany is treating the attacks as having been potentially carried out by a criminal organisation, the authority said on Thursday.

Perpetrators set three railway cable shafts on fire in the northern city of Hamburg last Friday, impairing the heavily used rail corridor to Berlin for about a day.

The Hamburg police, who had been handling the case, said they believed the fires were started intentionally and that the attacks were politically motivated.

A post on a left-wing website purported to take responsibility for the crime.

The letter said the attack was aimed at preventing the transport of “raw materials procured in the course of neocolonial exploitation and earth-destroying extractivism.’’
