60th AGC: NBA-SLP collaborates with the Nigerian Law School on Mentorship programme



Lagos, Aug. 28, 2020

The Nigerian Bar Association Section on Legal Practice, (NBA-SLP) on Friday, said it has concluded talks with the Nigerian Law School (NLS), to facilitate a mentorship programme for the benefit of students of its various campuses across the Country.

Chairman of the SLP, Mr Oluseun Abimbola, made this known during a virtual Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the section held as part of activities marking the Annual General Conference (AGC) of the NBA which kick started on Aug. 26.

The NBA AGC 2020, tagged " Step Forward", coincides with the 60th anniversary of the Association.

It is holding both virtually and physically from Aug. 26 to Aug. 29 in Lagos and Abuja respectively..

Delivering his speech at the AGM of the SLP, Abimbola said that in the course of the year, the section had taken steps towards implementation of its programme and objectives, but that the world was "stopped" by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He noted that this led to a lockdown with the attendant economic and social impact it created, adding that the section immediately adapted and changed its practice to still be able to further its objectives, while observing all protocols associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the Chairman, part of its objective has been to initiate and facilitate a Mentorship programme for students of the Nigerian law School, adding that the initiative will soon kick off.

He said:

"Immediately after the 2019 AGC, we submitted a proposal to the D-G of the Nigerian Law School Dr. Ciroma (SAN), for the section to establish a mentorship programme for the Law School to be hosted by the various campuses of the school.

"This mentorship scheme aims to.deepen their knowledge and equip them with the skills to be successful in their profession.

"I am pleased to inform this General meeting that the NLS has communicated its acceptance and readiness to collaborate with the SLP across all its campuses on this project; So, we await the modified calendar of the Law school so that we can roll out our own calendar towards that," he said

According to Abimbola, its committee on professional development has been charged with the responsibility of developing a structure around this collaboration, so that they.will not be overwhelmed by the responsibility of going round six campuses of the law school.

"Our intention is to ensure that we raise faculties from our members who are domiciled closest to whichever campus we will be having the event, so that we will be speaking in the same manner .

"We will like to have a uniform content and that Is why we have our professional development Committee modifying that structure for us and hopefully, within the next couple of weeks, when the modified calender of the law school is made available to us, we will be able to kick start this as well," he said

Abimbola said that the SLP also wishes to extend similar engagements to the university campuses, based on available resources, adding that members support, participation and cooperation is also Invited to contribute to the developement.

Giving a rfurther report on the activities of the section, he said that the SLP had also been able to initiate various seminars and webinars on divers subjects, which was attended by members.

The financial statement of the section was also read out during the virtual meeting, while a call was also made by the Chairman and Treasurer for more lawyers to be a part of the section.

The NBA-SLP has a total of 808 members.

NAN reports that the NBA 2020 AGC has about 25, 000 registered delegates participating in the conference.

Physical attendance at the Conference is holding at both the Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos, as well as The NBA Headquarters in Abuja, with not more than 30 persons allowed at the venue.

The conference showcased 30 law sessions on topical discuss and which are to be anchored by renowned Nigerian legal practitioners .

Meanwhile the handing over ceremony by the outgoing executives of the NBA to its newly elected officers, is billed to take place tommorow Aug. 29 at the NBA headquarters in Abuja
