whats stopping the Judiciary from carrying out its oversight functions in visiting the police detention centers at a time like this?

Following the three weeks long strike by the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria JUSUN, a convener of the police duty solicitors scheme Mr Bayo Akinlade, has now raised pertinent questions for leadership of the Nigerian Bar Association NBA, while the strike lasts.

He writes :

Let's look at the advantages of this for the Judiciary

1. Less charges are being filed when the courts eventually resume

2. The Judiciary will be seen as proactive and respected for it's protection of the rights of the common man

3. The public is bound to fight more for the independence of the Judiciary seeing that they do more than just sit in courts

4. Both the legislature and executive will sit up knowing that the Judiciary is willing to carry on its oversight responsibilities

5. It will decongest our courts and correctional facilities

The Judiciary is the last hope of the common man. I still believe this strongly because my many colleagues on the Bench are good people, they love Justice and they stand for equity and fairness.

I urge our Judges and Magistrates today to stand out and show the citizens that they have a saviour in the Judiciary!
