Nigerian Law Society Holds Successful 4th Annual General Meeting, Sets Stage for Main Conference Sessions

Theme: "Constitutional Democracy and the Role of the Judiciary – Who Decides? The People or the Courts?"

The Nigerian Law Society (NLS) today held its 4th Annual General Meeting (AGM) virtually, marking the successful opening of the Society's 4th Annual General Conference.

The AGM, which commenced at 5:00 PM, brought together National Officers, members, and stakeholders from across Nigeria via the Zoom platform. The meeting was called to order by the President of the Nigerian Law Society, Chief Mela Audu Nunghe, SAN .

Opening Prayer and Welcome Remarks

The opening prayer was offered by the 1st Vice President, A. A. Sani Esq. , who also serves as the Chairman of the AGC Planning Committee. He also delivered the welcome remarks, setting the tone for the deliberations ahead and welcoming all participants to the conference.

Key Highlights of the AGM

The AGM featured a robust agenda, including the adoption of the meeting agenda, reading and adoption of previous minutes, and a detailed financial report presented by the Treasurer. Members also deliberated on key matters affecting the Society and the legal profession at large.

Statement from the President

Speaking on the significance of the conference, Chief Mela Audu Nunghe, SAN , President of the Nigerian Law Society, stated: "This conference is a reflection of our commitment to the rule of law, judicial independence, and the protection of the rights and freedoms of all Nigerians. We are proud to host this gathering of legal minds who are shaping the future of our profession and our democracy."

Looking Ahead – Day 2 Programme

The main conference sessions continue tomorrow, Thursday, 16th July 2026 , from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM .

Highlights of Day 2 include:

· Keynote Address by Prof. Ugoji Adanma Eze, Ph.D. , Barrister-at-Law of the Honourable Society of Gray's Inn, London, and Member of the New York City Bar Association.
· Showcase Session on the Right to Freedom of Association and Assembly , featuring distinguished discussants, including Dr. Sylvanus Gbendazhi Barnabas, Associate Professor at Nile University, Abuja .
· Goodwill Messages from eminent legal bodies and individuals.
