On behalf of the leadership and entire membership of the Nigerian Law Society (NLS), we write not merely to mourn, but to bear witness to the end of a golden chapter in our nation's legal history.
Professor Alfred Bandele Kasumu, SAN, has departed—and with him goes a reservoir of jurisprudence, a library of wisdom, and a conscience that guided the Nigerian bar for over half a century.
He was not a man who simply practised law; he was the law—in its most refined, scholarly, and honourable form. A titan among titans, elevated to the rank of Senior Advocate in 1979, his intellectual footprint shaped the very foundations of Nigerian legal thought. He was a professor who taught not just students, but judges and future advocates; an author whose texts remain the sacred scriptures of legal practice; and a gentleman whose integrity was as unassailable as his arguments.
To lose Professor Kasumu is to lose a compass. His quiet dignity, his razor‑sharp intellect, and his unwavering commitment to justice were not merely professional attributes—they were the moral architecture upon which he built an extraordinary life. He leaves behind a profession that is intellectually poorer, yet spiritually richer for having been graced by his presence.
We cannot fill the void he leaves, but we can honour his legacy by upholding the standards he set. We pray that the Almighty God grants you, the immediate family, the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (BOSAN), and the entire legal community the fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss. Take solace in this truth: his life was not measured in years, but in the countless minds he shaped and the justice he advanced.
Rest well, learned silk. Rest well, professor. Rest well, icon. The gavel may have fallen silent, but your voice will echo through the courts of Nigeria for eternity.
Please accept our deepest sympathies and unwavering solidarity.
Yours sincerely,
AbdulqadirAlhaji Sani,
Ag. President
Nigerian Law Society (NLS)
